Tips & Limitations with the International Data Sync

"Application/Registration number not found"

When docketing a non-USPTO/non-CIPO mark, you might encounter the message seen below.

There a are a few reasons why a mark might not be able to sync:

  1. The mark is not in the third-party data aggregator's database. The database depends on the jurisdictions to release data for each mark, and there might be jurisdictions that release data at a slower rate than others. If a mark was recently filed, it might take some time before it can sync. In the meantime, it would be best to proceed with manually docketing the mark.
  2. The jurisdiction is not included in CompuMark's database. For a list of jurisdictions that are included, click here.

Tips for Connection

Depending on the jurisdiction, you might need to edit the way an application or registration number is formatted in order for it to connect. Below is a list of jurisdictions and tips we’ve found so far:

Bahrain
  • Remove "BHT" from the beginning of the application number.

China
  • Try syncing with only the first five digits of the application number.

Denmark
  • Denmark's application and registration numbers need to be in the following format:
    • Application numbers: VA XXXXXX XXXX
    • Registration numbers: VR XXXXXX XXXX
Egypt
  • Egypt marks typically connect through the application number, which usually needs to have the leading zero removed.

European Union
  • It can vary whether the leading zeros are needed. If you're having trouble connecting, try removing any leading zeros if the mark is unable to connect."
South Africa
  • Remove any slashes from the application and registration number.
Tunisia
  • Tunisia's application numbers typically need to be in the following format:
    • TN/E/XXX/XXX
    • Remove any leading zeroes in the last grouping of numbers (in bold above)
United Kingdom
  • It can vary whether or not the leading “UK00” is needed. If the application or registration number is not found, remove the leading “UK” and any leading zeros and try again.
WIPO + International Designations
  • To connect international designations, you will need to use the national application or registration numbers rather than the IR number. If you're unable to connect the mark using the IR number, it is recommended to manually docket the mark.
WIPO, US States, and Singapore
  • WIPO, US States, and Singapore marks will only sync with the registration number, not the application number.
